Glen Etive … profit, people and the environment

Glen_Etive__with_Allt_Mheuran_and_regeneration_in_the_foreground_detail JMTThis article from the John Muir Trust is about one of my favourite places in Scotland but what is being done there is being done everywhere. Usually we are conned into saying OK to it by a of long-worded jargon that sounds good and feeling overwhelmed by all we’re told – what I call politico-speak. Just about never is it truly about us, or about the good for the environment … it’s a sales-pitch to make profits for some company. Often we’re also told their profits a vital for our own wellbeing, jobs, house, power (in this case), and that everything will go tits-up if we don’t agree to it.
Just about always this is bollocks, but most of us feel quite inadequate to argue and demolished by the spiel of words we get back from whatever business/politico. This is because we get trapped into arguing the points the politico is making … we’re no longer educated to say “I just don’t buy into any of that” and, even if we do say that, the politico comes back at us with how ignorant, ill-educated, stupid, uncaring, or whatever words s/he thinks will belittle us into silence.
Think about it … you’ve been there … we all have!
What’s happened at Glen Etive is an example of this. The John Muir Trust has a completely different ideology to just about any business I can think of, and most governments (local or otherwise). They care about themselves, their shareholders and their profits; John Muir Trust cares about the land, the environment, the Earth, and the ordinary people. John Muir himself said, “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity.” I feel a strong personal affinity with that, I suspect many of you do too.
But that concept doesn’t work for money-making profit and Big Business. And they dress their ideas and plans in whatever language is currently fashionable to make sure they get what they want. Whenever and wherever you see thinking that does not take the environment and its needs, and so the needs of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people, into account fight back. Don’t allow them to pressurise and belittle you with their long-worded, technical arguments, they’re just trying to “blind you with science”. Glen Etive is about to suffer because of Big Business … and so is the whole Earth!
